The Call of the Wild
Originally published in the early 1900s, The Call of the Wild is Jack London’s masterpiece. Based on his own adventures as a prospector in the Canadian wilderness, the book tells the story of Buck. Part Scottish shepherd, part Saint Bernard, Buck is stolen from his California home and forced to work as a sled dog during the Klondike Gold Rush. To survive, Buck must return to his primordial nature.
The Count of Monte Cristo
Completed in 1844, The Count of Monte Cristo is one of the highest-selling books of all time. A classic tale of revenge and adventure, the story follows a young sailor known as Dantes. Charged with treason, he spends thirteen years on the prison island of Chateau d’If, where he plots revenge on those who set him up. With the help of another prisoner, Dantes eventually escapes and strives to put his plan in place.
The Circular Staircase
Dating back to 1908, The Circular Staircase is a story of intrigue and murder inside a pre-World War I mansion. While in a rented summer home with her adult niece and nephew, Rachel Innes thwarts a series of strange crimes. When a murder takes place, she uses her determination and intelligence to solve the crime. The book keeps readers engrossed until the very end, and blends the gilded age with a hint of the supernatural.Back to all posts
